How Braces Work

Orthodontic appliances are typically made of three different kinds:

  1. Metal - most efficient
  2. Ceramic - highly esthetic
  3. Plastic (Invisalign) - most esthetic, removable, high cost

Invisalign is a series of removable, comfortable, clear plastic aligners that are worn full time. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, bush, and floss. Orthodontic appliances work by slowly moving the teeth into a corrected position. Proper diagnosis and treatment planning, as well as proper techniques will enable the teeth to move into the right position to maximize your smile and facial profile. Modern wires and materials have enable teeth to move faster, more efficient with less discomfort to patients. Often, wearing rubber bands (elastics) will be required to assist in moving the teeth and jaw into proper, ideal position. They work by placing a gentle, constant force on the teeth and jaws. Patient cooperation is required for successful treatment.

Treatment Length

Typical comprehensive treatment time ranges from one to three years, depending on the jaw growth of the patient and severity of the orthodontic problem. Patients grow at different rates, thus the time to complete the case may differ from the original time estimate. Some limited treatment, such as limited adult treatment or early interceptive treatment may take as few as 6 months to complete. Patient cooperation (wearing of rubber bands and preventing breakage) contributes greatly in achieving successful, on-time treatment.
